Kolomenskoye GTTPP: Uniqueness, Siemens Technologies, and Our SpecialistsKolomenskoye GTTPP: Uniqueness, Siemens Technologies, and Our Specialists
Kolomenskoye Gas Turbine Thermal Power Plant (GTTPP) is one of the most high-tech and environmentally friendly small-scale power generation facilities in Moscow. The plant was commissioned in 2009 in the Southern Administrative Okrug (Moskvorechye-Saburovo district). The project was implemented as part of the capital’s Energy Strategy to eliminate electricity and heat shortages in densely populated areas of the city. In this article, we will examine in detail the key characteristics, the uniqueness of the facility, and the role played by the German concern Siemens, whose specialists now work in our company.
Brief Technical Specifications of Kolomenskoye GTTPP
    • Electrical Capacity: 136 MW (three power units of 45.3 MW each).
    • Thermal Capacity: 171 Gcal/h (three waste heat recovery boilers of 57 Gcal/h each).
    • Primary Fuel: Environmentally safe natural gas.
    • Generation Type: Cogeneration (simultaneous combined production of heat and electricity).

Uniqueness and Features of Kolomenskoye GTTPP
Location Within a Residential Area
The primary uniqueness of Kolomenskoye GTTPP lies in its geographical placement. The plant is built in close proximity to major residential quarters in Moscow’s Southern Administrative Okrug. Designing power facilities of this type inside a city requires strict compliance with sanitary standards.
The Quietest Plant in Europe
Due to its proximity to residential buildings, engineers paid increased attention to sound insulation. Thanks to innovative silencers and protective enclosures, Siemens officially recognized Kolomenskoye GTTPP as one of the quietest thermal power plants in Europe at the time of its launch. It operates virtually soundlessly and is completely comfortable for residents of neighboring areas.
High Eco-Friendliness and Low Emissions
The station utilizes advanced dry low-emission technology. This minimizes the concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon dioxide in the exhaust gases. The plant’s environmental performance indicators significantly exceed both Russian and European air quality standards.
Direct Integration into City Networks
The generated hot water goes directly into the heating networks of PJSC «MOEK», reducing heat losses to a minimum. Electricity is distributed to consumers in the Moskvorechye-Saburovo, Nagatino-Sadovniki, and Tsaritsyno districts.
Siemens’ Participation in the Project
The German technology giant Siemens acted as the main technological partner and key equipment supplier for Kolomenskoye GTTPP. Without their engineering solutions, implementing the facility within the city limits would have been impossible.
Implementation of SGT-800 Turbines
Highly efficient stationary Siemens SGT-800 gas turbines formed the foundation of each of the three power units. At the time of construction, these were cutting-edge machines combining record efficiency with exceptional reliability in continuous cogeneration mode.
Digital Automation System
For comprehensive plant management, the flagship automated process control system (ICAM/DCS) — Siemens SPPA-T3000 — was deployed. This system allows for:
    • Real-time monitoring of all GTTPP units.
    • Automatic regulation of generation volumes based on the city’s current consumption.
    • Timely prevention of any emergency situations at early stages.

Engineering Support During the Crisis
The Kolomenskoye GTTPP project was constructed during the global financial crisis of 2008–2009. Thanks to tight cooperation between Siemens engineers and Russian developers (NaftaSib Energia), the plant was commissioned strictly within the planned two-year timeframe. This set a unique precedent for the Moscow energy sector at that time.
